cellular manufacturing

A manufacturing plant (or subsection of a plant) in which machines, workbenches and processes are organized in distinct work areas ("cells") that are arranged such that work can move quickly and easily from one to the next through as it progresses through to finished goods. Each cell may have responsibility for performing a particular distinct process or making a particular subassembly. All the tools, materials and machinery necessary to perform the work assigned to a cell are close by to increase efficiency and co-workers are also in close proximity to facilitate rapid, easy feedback and collaboration.
